Chinese Americans
Since the first Chinese settlements in America, many different objects in a Chinese life style have changed. Living in America and trying to keep a Chinese tradition alive is not easy, since many people are influenced by the American way of life. Also, currently, the Chinese have equal rights as the American and they allowed qualifying for American citizenship. Having a citizenship can affect one drastically. Currently in America, all ethnic Chinese that are born in the United States are American citizens due to the Fourteenth Amendment. Presently, many Chinese children are born with an American citizenship, however, they do not practice the Chinese tradition. Minority of Chinese Americans born in the past decade know how to speak that language Chinese, but do not know how to read and write. The other majority borne Chinese American does not even speak the language anymore. Many are raised with American influence and traditions. Since many Chinese American surroundings are full of American culture, one is influenced to live like an American. Also, Chinese is proven to be one of the hardest languages in the world. If one does not practice Chinese everyday, most likely, they will not remember it. Trying to learn Chinese need daily practice and surrounded by others that speak Chinese . Another change in America since the 1800s is that Chinese immigrants are allowed to be an American citizenship. Before they were allowed to receive their citizenship, they were not allowed to hold government offices, employed by the state, or vote. Also, they did not have the right to file mining claims or have the right to own land. ( The History of Chinese Immigration ) Now, the Chinese have more right than they did before. In order to receive an American citizenship, if one is eighteen or younger, they only need to go through a long process of signing off paper work. However, if one is older than eighteen years old, they have to take a citizenship test. They need to memorize important topics about America. If they pass then they are allowed to receive an American citizenship too. Allowing the Chinese to receive citizenship allows them to participate in more political activities.
